On Friday, 4 November, 2016, JRHS NJROTC hosted the annual JRHS Veterans’ Day Ceremony. This year’s theme was in honor of all Veterans who served our nation during the Cold War and the Ceremony featured a Roundtable discussion with several veterans who answered questions submitted by James River students about their time in uniform. After the ceremony, the Cadets and veterans reported to the Memorial for a wreath-laying ceremony.

Thank you to all Cadets, Students, Teachers, and Guests who attended yesterday’s Memorial Day Assembly to honor all fallen American servicemen and women from the Revolutionary War to the present day, including two JRHS Alumni, USMC Lance Corporals Jourdan Grez (Class of 1999) and Karl Linn (Class of 2002). Following the ceremony in the auditorium, the Unit and distinguished guests participated in a wreath laying ceremony at the memorial to Linn and Grez.

As a surprise gesture of gratitude to our retiring Principal, Colonel Jeffrey Ellick, US Army (ret.), members of the JRHS NJROTC Honor Guard presented him and his family with a brick to be laid in the walkway of the memorial honoring Lance Corporals Jourdan Grez and Karl Linn. Several members of the JRHS office and administrative staff were present. Commanding Officer Cadet Lieutenant Commander John Booker said a few brief words prior to the ceremony, and Principal Ellick made his gratitude known to the Unit, posing for a picture with the very Cadets that presented him his brick.

On Friday, 18 March, the unit held an All-Company Formation. During the formation, Principal Ellick spoke to the Cadets about the unit’s impressive performance at Area 5 Championships and was presented with the Second Place Academic trophy earned at Area. Also featured was a performance by the Unarmed Exhibition team, which preceded several awards, including the frocking of Cadets Jack Pearcy, Spencer Willett, and Meily Yong to the rank of Cadet Seaman (E-3) and Cadet Daniel Cappiello to Cadet Petty Officer Third Class (E-4). In addition, the Company Staff roster for the 2016-2017 Academic Term was announced. The Cadets of the month for March, 2016 are Cadet PO/3 Daniel Cappiello for the NS1 award and Cadet PO/3 Quinn Lilly for the upperclassman award. The NJROTC cadets in partnership with the Leadership and International Relations Center will host our 4th Annual Veterans Day assembly on Friday, 6 November 2015. As a follow up to our 2013 and 2014 assemblies in which we hosted five WW II and five Korean War veterans respectively in a round table discussion, we will host six Vietnam War veterans on stage. 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War with our first ground combat troops deploying to Vietnam on 8 March 1965. We invite all Richmond-area Vietnam era veterans and their guests to join us for both our pre-assembly reception at 1115, the assembly at 1205, followed immediately by a brick and wreath laying ceremony at our memorial circle. On 7 November 2015, our very own Physical Training Officer c/Ensign Ewing will lead our effort to host our Second Annual Rapids Run for Veterans 5K. All proceeds will benefit our local Fisher House, a non-profit organization that provides veterans’ families a place to stay at no cost while their loved one is receiving medical treatment. The same day registration is at 0930, the Fun Run for kids starts at 1030 and the 5K will start immediately following the Fun Run. The 5K is run entirely on the James River High School campus. The entry fee for Vets and students is $15 and $20 for all other participants. Same-day registration is $20. “Top 10 Runner” t-shirts will be given to the top 10 runners. Sugar Shack will sponsor a light breakfast and a meet and greet with local veterans.
